DWTS Season 29, Icons Night

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another blog post!

Today, I am doing my recap for DWTS Icons night.

So, let's get into it.

Justina Machado & Sasha Farber

Icon - Madonna

Dance - rumba

Song - "crazy for you" by Madonna

Scores - 8,8,8 = 24/30

My score - 8

This dance was pretty solid, although I have definitely seen better technique from her before. She was very exact with her movements, but that sometimes translated to her being almost too careful. And at times, it felt like her arms—despite them moving beautifully with the music—were more into the music than the rest of her body.

Nelly & Daniella Karagach

Icon - Tupac Shakur

Dance - jazz

Song - "california love" by 2pac feat. Dr. Dre & Roger Troutman

Scores - 8,8,8 = 24/30

My scores - 8

This Jazz was exciting, although Nelly’s overall movement just isn’t as refined as it probably should be for week nine.

Aj Mclean & Cheryl Burke

Icon - Freddie Mercury

Dance - viennese waltz

Song - "somebody to love" by queen

Scores - 7,8,8 = 23/30

My score - 8

This dance was really good but Aj did make a couple of mistakes and stumbles.

Kaitlyn Bristowe & Artem Chigvintsev

Icon - Britney Spears

Dance - argentine tango

Song - "toxic" by Britney Spears

Scores - 10,10,10 = 30/30

My score - 10

All I'm going to say about this dance is if this dance didn't get one single ten, what dance would have? Because this dance is if not the best dance in DWTS history, it's the best dance this season in my opinion.

Johnny Weir & Britt Stewart

Icon - Amy Winehouse

Dance - quickstep

Song - "valerie" by Amy Winehouse

Scores - 10,10,10 = 30/30

My score - 9.5

This was a feel-good type of dance with great precision, and even though I noticed some gapping, I am happy that these two got a perfect score for it.

Skai Jackson & Alan Bersten

Icon - Janet Jackson

Dance - paso doble

Song - "if" by Janet Jackson

Scores - 9,9,9 = 27/30

My score - 9

Skai and Alan had a great bull-like intensity with each other. Perhaps, though, there was too much control to the point where some of the attack felt lacking. There was also a point where Skai rushed a bit, making some of the arm movements feel a bit hectic. But this was a performance that I don’t think Skai would have had enough confidence to perform with such energy earlier on in the season.

Nev Schulman & Jenna Johnson

Icon - Elton John

Dance - jive

Song - "Saturday night's alright for fighting" by Elton John

Scores - 9,9,9 = 27/30

My score - 9

Nev killed it, like always. One critique that I have for this performance, though, is that the footwork seemed to lose a little energy towards the end of the performance. And Nev needs to be more consistent with pointing his toes!

Now, onto the dance offs

Justina & Sasha vs Kaitlyn & Artem

Dance - cha cha

Song - "telephone" by Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce

judges' votes - Kaitlyn, Justina, Justina

My vote - Justina & Sasha

There were different aspects of the Cha-Cha that Justina and Kaitlyn excelled at. Justina was much more grounded in her footwork and absolutely sold her hip action, but Kaitlyn was more poised and purposeful with her lines. They both had respectable technique, but ultimately this Dance-Off came down to the energy for me. At times, it felt like Kaitlyn was just going with the motions, but Justina was pulling in the non-existent audience and was super duper spicy. This was a close contest, but Justina and Sasha were the winners in my book.

Nelly & Daniella vs Skai & Alan

Dance - salsa

Song - "the cup of life" by Ricky Martin

Judges' votes - Skai, Nelly, Skai

My vote - Skai & Alan

Nelly and Daniella gave off more of a sexy and party-like vibe, and Skai and Alan were just all around lots of fun and high-energy. Both Nelly and Skai had their mistakes, but overall, I think Skai and Alan had the morse consistent and impactful content, so I would have given the bonus points to them.

Aj & Cheryl vs Johnny & Britt

Dance - jive

Song - "wake me up before you go-go" by wham!

Judges' votes - Johnny, Aj, Aj

My vote - Johnny & Britt

AJ was more in tune with Cheryl than last time, which is a testament to how much AJ and Cheryl has grown as a couple this season. Meanwhile, Johnny and Britt had even more charisma in this Jive than they did in their Jive from week four. Overall, though, I definitely think Johnny had the better technique over AJ.

That's it for this weeks recap.

Until next time,

~Brianna.
